How to stand out in a job application

Most applicants list what they are responsible for. You stand out by showing what changed because of you.

4 minute read

1. Use the employer's words

Mirror the language in the advert where it is true for you. Readers scan for the skills they asked for.

2. Be specific

Numbers, names and results make an example believable.

3. Show you know the organisation

Mention something real: a project, a value or a service they run, and connect it to what you would bring.

4. Tailor every application

Change your profile, your order of evidence and your examples for each role. It takes longer and it works better.

5. Prepare for the interview now

The examples in your application are the ones you will be asked about. Practise telling each one out loud in two minutes.

6. Let employers see your evidence

A link to your best work, such as a Proof of Work page, lets an employer see more than a CV can show.

Final check: the swap test

Take one paragraph of your application and imagine another applicant's name on it. If it would still be true for them, it is too general. Add the detail only you could write: the place, the number, the result.

In Submiti: Interview prep helps you practise answers, the Writing Room helps you write statements from real examples, and Proof of Work gives you a link to share.
