Why am I not hearing back from job applications?
Silence after an application is common, and it rarely means you are not good enough. There can be many reasons: lots of applicants, an internal candidate, a role that was paused or filled, or a slow process. Some of these you cannot control. The things below are the ones you can.
1. Check the essential criteria first
Open the advert and find the person specification. If you cannot show every essential criterion, the application is unlikely to go further. Apply to fewer roles where you clearly match.
2. Stop sending the same CV
A CV written for every job rarely fits any one of them well. Match your profile and your first few bullet points to the words in this advert.
3. Back every skill with an example
"Good communicator" tells the reader nothing. One real example of when you explained something, and what happened because of it, tells them a lot.
4. Apply early and track closing dates
Some roles close early once enough people apply. Keep every role, its closing date and its stage in one place so nothing slips.
5. Read your application as the employer
Give yourself 30 seconds with your CV and the advert side by side. Can you see why you fit? If not, move your best evidence higher.
A quick checklist
- I meet every essential criterion
- My CV uses the advert's words
- Each skill has a real example
- I applied before the closing date
